Understanding Your Colon Cancer Screening Options

Colon cancer screening is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your long-term health. In this video, Ravikant Varanasi, a PMC Gastroenterologist, shares the three main colon cancer screening options available and explains the differences between each test to help patients make informed decisions about their care.

Screening options discussed include:

  • FIT (Fecal Immunochemical Test) – a non-invasive, at-home stool test designed to detect hidden blood in the stool.
  • Cologuard® – a stool DNA test that looks for abnormal DNA markers and blood associated with colon cancer.
  • Colonoscopy – the most comprehensive screening option, allowing physicians to directly examine the colon and remove precancerous polyps during the same procedure.

Dr. Varanasi also explains why colonoscopy remains the gold standard for colon cancer screening, as it is the only screening method that both detects abnormalities and allows for immediate removal of polyps before they have the opportunity to develop into cancer.

Every patient’s health history, risk factors, and preferences are unique. This video is designed to help patients better understand their screening choices and feel confident discussing the best option with their healthcare provider.
